Can Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy be Dangerous?

Leucorrhoea during pregnancy is due to an increase in estrogen levels and blood flow to the vagina. This additional fluid that comes out of the cervix is ​​actually waste products from the uterus and vagina, normal bacteria from the vagina and dead cells from the vaginal wall.

In early pregnancy, this fluid fills the cervical canal to create protective mucus that looks like egg white. Ahead of childbirth, this mucus will become more and more.

Normal vaginal discharge during pregnancy is characterized by a clear or white discharge and no odor. However, hormonal changes and body shape make pregnant women more likely to experience vaginal infections. Therefore, sometimes vaginal discharge can turn into a sign of infection, including:

Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis occurs when hormonal changes result in excessive bacterial growth in the vagina. This condition can result in babies born prematurely or born underweight. Bacterial vaginosis is generally accompanied by symptoms:

Itching around the vagina

Leak gray discharge.
Pain when urinating.
Sometimes this condition can subside by itself. But there are times when antibiotic treatment is needed. If left unchecked, this infection can spread and become a pelvic inflammatory disease.

Fungal infections

Increased levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone will also increase the overgrowth of Candida, a fungus that grows naturally in the vagina. If this happens, you can experience a yeast infection. Symptoms of a yeast infection include:

• Yellowish white discharge, odorless or not.
• Pain during sexual intercourse.
• The vagina or labia is red and swollen.

Streptococcus Group B (SGB)

SGB ​​is found in one in four healthy women. But in some people, SGB can cause serious infections. The symptoms of this infection are the same as those of a urinary tract infection in general, such as cloudy urine, burning sensation during urination, and sudden feeling of urination.

So that this infection is not transmitted to the baby, the doctor will give antibiotics when the mother undergoes labor. Unfortunately, there are no steps that can be taken to prevent this condition.

Trichomoniasis

The bacterium that causes trichomoniasis lives in the vagina and is transmitted through sexual contact. Symptoms include yellowish green foam and foul-smelling liquid, as well as itching and burning sensation during sexual intercourse. Generally doctors will prescribe antibiotics to treat this condition.

If you experience the conditions above, you should immediately consult a gynecologist and avoid using over-the-counter medicines. Beware also if your gestational age has not reached 37 weeks but there is a change in the shape and color of the fluid that comes out of the vagina, for example, become liquid, bleed, change color to brown or pink. This condition can be a symptom of premature birth.
