In addition to the navel that looks more prominent, some pregnant women may experience pain in the navel. Basically, belly button pain during pregnancy is not dangerous, but of course can disturb the comfort of pregnant women.

Navel pain is a normal thing that can be experienced by pregnant women in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Generally the belly button will disappear by itself after the pregnancy or six weeks after giving birth.

Causes of navel pain during pregnancy
Navel pain during pregnancy can be caused by the following things:

1. Pressure on the uterus

The main cause of navel pain is increased uterine pressure. This occurs because of the increase in fetal size and size of the uterus.

2. Stretching the skin and muscles

As the gestational age increases, the skin and abdominal muscles of pregnant women will be more stretched. Stretching on this skin can make the belly button become painful and itchy.

3. Navel piercing

Piercing on the navel can be one of the causes of the navel becoming easily sick and experiencing irritation. Therefore, if pregnant women have navel piercings, the piercings should be removed and not used during pregnancy.

4. Umbilical hernias

Navel pain during pregnancy can also be caused by umbilical hernias. Umbilical hernias are characterized by bumps or swelling around the navel. The risk of developing umbilical hernias will increase if pregnant women are also obese.

When pregnant women begin to feel pain and discomfort in the navel, several ways that can be done to reduce it are:

  • Wear loose clothes and pregnancy pants.
  • Wear a special belt for pregnant women, to support the stomach.


When experiencing navel pain, some of the conditions above can be the cause. Although the pain in the belly button of a pregnant woman is normal, pregnant women should consult a gynecologist immediately if the navel pain does not disappear for a long time or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as cramps, fever, vomiting, and bleeding.
