Soaring Corona Cases, Britain is Ready to Implement Tighter Social Restrictions

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would soon impose tighter restrictions on Britain to contain the rapidly increasing coronavirus outbreak.

He also indicated that secondary schools may not reopen this month.

COVID-19 cases have risen sharply in the UK in recent weeks, driven by a new, more contagious variant of the virus. As of Sunday there were reported nearly 55,000 new cases and a total of more than 75,000 people in the country have died from COVID-19.

While visiting the hospital to see the first people to receive a vaccine made by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, Johnson said his country was facing tough and tough weeks.

"If you look at the numbers, there is no doubt that we will have to take tougher action and we will announce it in due time," said Johnson.

The UK is currently divided into four levels of restriction, depending on the prevalence of the virus, with most countries in Levels 3 and 4 where social mixing is restricted and restaurants and pubs closed.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said earlier that the Level 3 regulations were clearly not working. While Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own strict limits.

"It seems that secondary schools may have played more of a role in the spread of the epidemic than primary schools, so we have to look closely at what we do with middle schools at the end of the month," he said.

The government has spent this year trying to balance the need to shut down the country to contain the virus without disrupting the economy.
