How can I obtain a certified copy of my Birth Certificate?


The birth certificate is in the archive for anyone born in an area, or anyone whose parents lived in the area at the time of his birth. To get a certified copy of your birth certificate will be charged.

In order to be eligible to receive a copy of the birth certificate, you must be able to document that you are related to the person whose birth was recorded in one of the following ways:

  • You are the person whose birth is recorded, and you are 18 years or older;
  • You are the child, grandchild, spouse, parent, guardian or grandparent of that person (you must be able to provide documentation that proves the relationship);
  • You are a lawyer who represents the person or parent, guardian, child or spouse who is still alive;
  • You are a member of the genealogical community authorized by the Secretary of State to do business in the State of Connecticut; or
  • Other persons or entities as permitted by the Connecticut General Statute §7-51.


How do I request a birth certificate?

If you are a party entitled to a birth certificate, you can request it by mail or directly. To request a birth certificate by mail, you must complete the application for a birth certificate. You must send a photo identification copy (Don't Send Original Documents). Identification must be a legal document and issued by the government.

Forms of identification that can be accepted are:

  • Driver's license
  • Identification card issued by the country
  • The government issued employment identification
  • Passport


If you do not have an acceptable form of photo identification, you can send a photocopy of the following two (2) documents:

  • Social security card
  • Social security cards are equipped with employment I.D, salary deductions or W-2 forms. (Providing documents in this subdivision fully meets the identification requirements)
  • Automatic registration
  • Copy of utility bill with name & address
  • Check the account deposit slip or bank statement that states the current name & address
  • Voter registration card
  • Legitimate governments issue trade or professional licenses
  • Legitimate governments issue firearms permits
  • Trial documents are issued by courts or other government institutions based on criminal penalties
  • Letter from a government agency that verifies identity (letter must be dated in the last 6 months)
  • Release documentation from correctional institutions containing photos of former detainees and release dates within 12 months before request
